Victoria’s most dangerous dentist

The most dangerous dental practice in Victoria has been revealed, with four of the country’s top five highest-ranking dentists now linked to violent assaults, according to a new study.

Key points:The study, commissioned by the Victorian Dental Association (VDA), found that four of six dental students and three of five dentists who work in dentistry are violent offendersOne of the most common offenders is a dentist with an outstanding recordTwo of the five dentistry directors are found to be violent offendersThe study also found that in 2015-16, the VDA received more than $200,000 in donations from dentists and dental students who had links to violence.

In a report to the Victorian Government, the Victorian dental association said it would be working with the Victorian Police Service to find the dentists responsible.

It also highlighted the need to take a “more holistic approach to tackling violent crime”, which it said had increased by 40 per cent in Victoria in the past five years.

“It is vitally important to ensure we have a proactive, proactive approach to combating violent crime and to address the root causes,” VDA chairman Dr Peter Kavanagh said.

“These findings show that we need to work with the police and community partners to ensure a more holistic approach is implemented.”

In 2015-2016, the Victoria Police Service received more $20 million in donations, with donations totalling $68 million.

“The findings of the VDSA report highlight the need for a holistic approach that is based on a clear understanding of the underlying factors and the underlying causes,” Mr Kavanah said.

Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the Victorian government would continue to work closely with the VDAs report and other bodies to make sure the Victorian public received the best possible information about violent crime.

“We know from the recent spate of violent crimes that it is a real problem and we know that the victims of these crimes are the ones that are often left behind,” she said.

The VDA has launched an online petition calling on the Government to ban dental students from attending dental school, a step that would be welcomed by dentists.

The Victorian Government also announced it would close a “factory school” for dentists to allow them to continue to practice dentistry in a more stable environment.
